Daily Life in Senegal

St Louis is divided into three parts - the main Island, the fishing village and mainland community. Most volunteers live on the mainland, and most schools are either there or on the island itself. Usually volunteers are able to walk to and from work - otherwise, there are numerous taxis and buses for getting around town, and distances are never very long.

Accommodation is with local families, most of whom take one or two volunteers at a time. Living with a host family is undoubtedly the best way to get to know such a different country and culture. You will have all your meals with the family and the will always be there to help in any way needed.

School hours tend to be from 08:00 to midday and from 15:00 to 18:00 or 19:00, and most volunteers work an average of 4 or 5 hours of contact teaching per day. In the evenings, volunteers often visit each other's families, or go into town to some of the many nice bars or cafes which the town offers.

During the weekends, there is a nearby beach, swimming pools, many social events and films at the French cultural centre, a tennis club, and there are some pleasant day trips that can be taken from St Louis. Your family will also be very keen to involve you in their social activities!
